The general situation of the conferences

01

The general provisions of Law of the People’s Republic of China on TCM clearly stated that TCM is the general term of medicine for all Chinese ethnic groups including the Han ethnic group and minority ethnic groups , and it also reflects the understanding of the Chinese nation on life, health and diseases. This law also pointed out that the state will vigorously develop TCM and implement the policy of placing equal stress on TCM and modern medicine. Meanwhile the " Strategic Development Program for TCM (2016-2030)" and the "White Paper on TCM in China" issued by the State Council brought forward that the development of TCM should be upgraded to a national strategy. The report of the 19th CPC National Congress further explicitly proposed that we should implement a Healthy China Strategy, insist on equal emphasis on TCM and Western medicine, and inherit and develop TCM.The directives and strategies of the Party and state on the development of TCM are the guidelines of the development of TCM in the new era.

What we have done persistently and diligently for many years is building a “ Integrated Chinese medicine ” system and an international academic platform aimed at promoting cooperation and communication among traditional medicines of various ethnic groups and promoting the integration of TCM and modern medicine (Integrative Medicine). To this end, we have always advocated these novel concepts of “Integrated Chinese medicine”, “Integrated Traditional medicine”,“Trichotomy” and “Five Elements” and proposed the concept of “Three Fusions”. “Traditional Chinese medicine” collectively refers to the traditional medicine of ethnic minorities based on the Chinese nation’s community, including Han medicine, Tibetan medicine, etc.  “Integrated Traditional medicine” is to build a new traditional medicine system in respect of the common characteristic of tradional medicines and a the community with shared future for humanity. Trichotomy, the basic structure of TCM, comprises the following three parts: 1The part that is consistent with modern medicine;2The part that is superior to modern medicine;3The part that is inferior to modern medicine (that is something needed to be reconsidered and even abandoned). Traditional medicines of different ethnic groups are more similar than differences. Each of them is an organic comples of clinical experience, classical philosophy, regional culture, several community concepts, and original basic medical knowledge. This is the “Five Elements of TCM”.In terms of “Three Fusions”, first, it refers to the integration of the traditional medicines of various ethnic groups in China, aiming to establish a new system of Chinese traditional medicine based on the Chinese nation community. Second, it refers to the integration of the traditional medicines of all nations in the world, aiming to establish a new system of traditional medicine based on the world nation community.Third, it refers to the integration of TCM and modern medicine, aiming to explore and enrich TCM and develop modern medicine by using technologies, theories and methods of modern science and modern medicine. The above mentioned are our medical ideals and goals.

Toward this endfrom 2011 to 2018, from Shanghai to Urumqi, Xining, Xishuangbanna, Xingyi, Nanning and other cities ,with everyone's participation, we have always adhered to the belief that different ethnic groups are united, different ethnomedicines are integrated, TCM and modern medicine are fused and medical science and medical humanities are connected, aiming at building a medical system with the connotation of “Appreciating the culture/values of others as do to one's own, making the medical world a harmonious whole.” Based on the foundation of the Chinese national community, this medical system may be blend of various ethnomedicines such as Han medicine, Tibetan medicine, Mongolian medicine, etc. which allows the existence of disparity and a multifarious integration.

02

As we gradually realized that medicine is a humanistic and social science, we not only invite medical colleagues, but also invite scholars in the humanities to participate in every session, with an intention to recognize and carry forward the easily neglected medical humanistic values and elucidate profound medical intensions from different perspectives on history, philosophy, diplomacy and music.

Based on the above medical goals, under the joint participation of all ethnomedicines and the concerted efforts of people from all walks of life, the International Academic Conference on Comparison of Traditional and Modern Medicine has gradually become an influential well-known conference and served as a communication bridges among various ethnomedicines and the communication bridge between TCM and modern medicine.  Our upcoming meeting in Dunhuang is a retrospective and prospective one on the Integrated Chinese medicine.

DunhuangDun means vast land and Huang means prosperity. The 7th International Academic Conference on Comparison of Traditional and Modern Medicine will be held in Dunhuang because we hope to follow the steps of development of Chinese traditional medicine and forge ahead into the future in this historical and cultural city on the Silk Road and we also look forward to open a new chapter on the development of TCM through the cohesion of people's will, intelligence and power.
